Excited to party

Yes, I did just get back from GDC, and I’m sitting here waiting for the hours to tick away before I go to my cousin’s bday party. I actually didn’t party much at GDC. I had a total of one drink the whole week and I was eating dinner alone! lol This is because I go to GDC to work. So everything is about meeting people, talking, and then getting back in time to write.

I’ve worked on GA all day today and am definitely ready to go and party. No kareoke for me, but I’m definitely going to have a few and let lose. On a school night no less, but oh yeah… I don’t have a job yet. So party on Garth.

I’ll post some pics tomorrow from going out tonight.

GDC 2009 is over and I’m exhausted

I love the Game Developers Conference. I have attended as press for the last three years. The Game Developers conference really is for the people that work in the industry. The panels are in-depth conversations about new tools, middleware and how companies achieved tasks for their titles. The best in the industry are on panels to inspire and advise others in the industry. Because of this, sometimes I feel bad being press. The conference is not for us, it’s for them. Because of that, I never write and ask for interviews. I wait and let companies offer or email me about opportunities.

Write me they did. I was there between Wednesday to Friday with about every hour booked. I even had to shuffle and reschedule some items. I ended up with 30 minutes on the expo floor and only 15 minutes in the Career section. I went to a few parties each night, but not all of the ones I was invited to. Every night ended at 10pm for me so I could write a few articles for GA and end up in bed by midnight. It was an insane schedule. I loved it, but I really wish that I could have invited another GA editor or had some help. It’s just too much to cover.

I did come back with more energy for GA. During GDC I wrote 7 articles and have 6 more to write. I took today off (kindof), I had to go through email. I am also trying to get quotes for an article I’m working on for the gadget blog.

While I was at GDC I heard many reporters lament the fact that very few announcements were made. Kojima is announcing his newest game at E3 and so is Peter Molyneux. To those reporters, I say to remember that this convention is not for you. It’s not for the hits you need to get on an article. It’s for the men and women that want to work in the industry. That have a dream and are trying to network and make their dream come true. The panels may not all be newsworthy but they are all passionate. That is what GDC is all about.

Today I worked abit on the dev site. Tomorrow I’ll write some and then go out to party later that night. I’m also working on a secret project that I hope to announce at the end of the month.

xoxo

It’s March Madness baby!

2009 Final Four logo

It’s March Madness baby! My favorite time of year. I love sports probably more than the average male and especially love Basketball. One of my favorite memories is being in college when University of Arizona won the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. The bars were flooded, we drank, cheered, and run into the street hugging everyone celebrating our team’s win.

While I love the NBA, (go Clippers!), college ball has much more heart than the NBA. NBA players can sometimes seem completely disinterested in their team or even winning. College teams play every game with heart especially during the tournament. March Madness means that it’s anyone’s game. While very few upsets tend to happen, I don’t think a number 1 seed has ever been knocked out first round, upsets do happen. It’s all about the dance and who is going to be the Cinderella team this year.

So we make our brackets and try to predict which teams will move on. If anything, it’s a nice burst of positivity and hope in a time that can be anything but.

I’m still unemployed. For the last week, I’ve been re-working my resume. I am quite proud of it now and feel ready to take on the world with it. I’m finally going for a career that I know I will enjoy. Instead of just doing what I’m good at. In the meantime, I’m brushing up on my programming chops and loving it so much. I’m learning something new every day and if you know me, that makes me ridiculously happy.

The GamingAngels redesign is coming along nicely. I’m loving it actually. I see the organization, the ability to see posts better, and hope that our writers will get more of the attention they deserve.

While being unemployed may be a scary time, and I can’t spend a lot of money or go out every night having fun, being unemployed has been a positive experience for me so far. Gone are the stresses, gone is the drama, and it’s replaced by hard work that I enjoy. Hopefully all that hard work and learning will lead to an actual job that I love.

Now back to the Madness baby!

Start of week 3 of unemployment but not worried

I can’t figure out why I’m not worried. This is the start of my third week of unemployment. I have completely reformatted my resume. It now looks better and is formatted to the type of job that I now want to go for. Yes, I have decided to slightly change careers and try for a career as Project Manager, Producer, or Web Producer. I am interested in Project Management and am trying to get my PM certification. Money is basically holding me back, but isn’t that always the case?

Yes I’ve decided to switch from IT. The typical Systems Admin, Network admin, help desk roles. Because frankly, they bore me. While I know alot about IT, I am best at mixing my IT knowledge with others to get a project completed. I know how to really talk to people that don’t understand IT. It’s time I go for a position where I am engaged and enthusiastic about working there. Hopefully never have to change an printer toner again.

In addition to looking for jobs daily, I have also filed my unemployment. The process seems to take a long time before you get approved to get your first check.

So all that should have me worried, only I’m not. Every day I have a full schedule with tasks on both GA, and personal life. I barely have time to actually rest. I don’t ever just sit on the couch and veg out. I’m either contacting people, scheduling appointments, writing articles or working on the dev site. Which is extremely interesting to me. I love working on GA. Just need to get myself to stop updating the old site and work on the new site.

The sun is absolutely beautiful today and hopefully it shows that the days will start getting warmer. I will be attending GDC next week. I have a full three days of appointments. Should be fun and I have some serious work I want to do there. I hope to represent for GamingAngels.com in the best way that I can.

I actually thought I’d get to rest more being unemployed. But I’m busier than ever. I guess that’s just me. ^_^

Working out the glutes

Today’s workout video is Self: Your Best Butt, Fast. The video was created in 2005 from Self magazine. You work out your Abs, glutes, pretty much your entire lower area. The video is 45 minutes and is one of the best lower body workouts I have had in a long time! While the women doing the workout is way too tan and way too buff, the movements are made for anyone to do. The workout is divided into sections. The sections are kickboxing, weights, dance and yoga. This video also has a cool down at the end with some really nice stretches.

My recommendation is to definitely try this video for yourself if you are looking for something to work out those glutes! The difficulty can be ramped and it’s quite a workout!

Otherwise today, I spent some time looking for jobs and time updating GA. I’m off to get groceries and then back to GA before another job hunt round and then planning the night. I started reading Veronika decides to die last night which is being made into a movie with Sarah Michelle Geller. I hope to get a bit more playing time in tonight. But we’ll see.

I finished Flower last night. Definitely love the game but I do get tense when the environment gets dark and scary. It feels like the world is attacking my little petal that is just trying to spread color and happiness. A truely enjoyable experience from ThatGameCompany.

A relaxing Sunday

I spent most of the weekend with my parents. My dad got my mom Wii Fit which I think is adorable. I bet she uses it more than I have. I spent an hour today applying and searching for jobs. I have decided that the rest of today will be spent relaxing. No programming today. No researching.

What does a day of relaxing entail? So far, finishing the Star Ocean anime, then play some Little Big Planet, Halo Wars, and Puzzle Quest. For some reason I’m addicted to Celebrity Apprentice. I’ll be watching that tonight.

Last night we hosted a bad movie night. Eagle Eye was the selected movie of choice. Great company and a great time was had by all. Now I’m planning a Twilight launch party which I think will be fun. ^_^

Okay off to play. I don’t want to be on the pc too much today. Btw, tomorrow I have a photo shoot while I’m working out using my 360! haha

Almost there…and making strides

It feels good to be making strides. To keep moving forward. Today I made my first video gadget review. It was fun. I definitely want to start doing more informative videos on GA. It will also get me used to being on camera and cut out my “ums”. I got through all my email today. We had two GamingAngels staff meetings.

Tonight I’ve worked on the dev GA site some. I fixed one error we were having. I have one more major error to fix before I dive into porting over the data. It feels great to be able to pour so much hard work into GA.

Now I’m going to watch some anime and relax.

Day 1 unemployment…what did I do?

So far I am keeping my schedule. I did sleep in an extra hour, so I started updating GA news at 9am until 10am. From 10-11 I applied for jobs. I think I sent my resume to 10 new jobs so far. I think worked out from 11:30 – 12:30. I just finished working out using Netflix Streaming on my Xbox 360. The workout video I used was Crunch: Fat Burning Dance.

Here is my short review:
Crunch: Fat Burning Dance was released in 2004. Which may explain the older moves, but the video will still get your heart pumping. This video is great for people that are hesitant to try dance workouts or are new to dance. The moves are simple and Jennifer does a great job breaking down the moves and adding on in a manner that you will never get lost. This 44 minute video ramps up nicely and will definitely get your heart beating. The cool down is a little short.

Now I’m off to the bank to deposit checks. Going to get some food and I’m trying to find a laptop desk so my neck stops hurting from looking down at my laptop. When I get back, it will be work on GA for a few hours, get in some gaming time and look for jobs again.

I bought a lapdesk for my laptop from BestBuy. Not a lot of choices. I was hoping to see the cool Logitech one that I saw at CES, but no one had it. So until then this one will have to do. I’ll also have to remember to stretch my neck now and then.

Tonight I’m going to watch 27 Dresses and just relax. Possibly play some Flower. Play something on my DS and read a book before bed. I applied for jobs in the late afternoon. I think a total of 12 today. But I’m completely unmotivated right now to do much work on GA. Not sure why. Hopefully I’ll wake up tomorrow start with the news and get that energy back!
