It’s week six in our household (that is post baby) and I had a new symptom flare up in the last week, swelling. If you remember, I was quite swollen in the ankles/legs area during pregnancy and then post pregnancy for a couple of weeks. When that went away, I thought..wow I’m in the clear and pain free. WRONG.
My morning starts around 3am (or sometimes 1am) as I attempt to warm a bottle of milk before Pumpkin starts crying. In the last week, that has become incredibly difficult due to my swelling. The swelling in my hands make it difficult to grab the cup to warm. The swelling in my knees make it difficult to walk (I shuffle to the kitchen in tiny steps). By the time I reach the kitchen I’m in tears. But I have to get this done so that pumpkin can eat.
After the return trip, I have to pick up Pumpkin to place her on my lap to feed her. Making sure I work through the pain to get a good grip on her. The pain in my elbows makes it incredibly difficult to bring her to my shoulder to burp.
The following areas are swollen/causing me pain:
- Fingers
- Wrists
- On top of my hand (two lumps)
- Elbows – I can barely brush my hair
- Shoulders
- Behind my knees
- Ankles
- Calves
Thank god that the changing table came in Saturday. Beforehand, I was changing her on the floor on a changing mat. Getting down to the floor and getting back up is impossible without using the help of other furniture. The other day, whatever tendons behind my knee that is swollen locked up and I basically fell to the floor in pain. Again, thankfully I did not have Pumpkin with me.
I hear that some women do get carpel tunnel after pregnancy. Did you? What did you do to help the pain go away? Did you have swelling in any other area?
At this point, I am working through the pain or taking a pain med. The swelling never goes down. I have an OB appointment next week and I hope she has answers. Because right now I feel so very broken.

On the floor? Ouch.
Pregnancy is a painful time and it takes a while to get back to normal. You’re not broken, but take it way momma!

Thanks hon! Yeah hopefully I will have the time to heal! We’ll see what the OB says about what this swelling is.

Being a brand new mom is hard enough without something like this. So sorry to hear and hope things get better soon. Lean on family and friends to help you out as much as possible (though finding someone to take over the post midnight feedings is likely not happening) and hopefully relief is in the near future.

Thank you. This is actually the first week I’m doing this solo. But my mom and dad have been coming after work to help. The mornings are the worst. So hoping that the flare up goes down soon.

Have you checked your blood pressure Trina? Are you having any other symptoms – headaches, dizziness, fainting, light-headedness? Many times swelling is related to that and it would be good to rule that out and make sure it’s nothing heart/bp related. Sounds excruciating, I wish you were having a better time with the post-partum stuff. At least Miranda is cute, so that helps make up for some!

I have to check it actually Joselyn. I did have high bp during the pregnancy and shortly after, but then it dropped. A week later the swelling came. It is so painful. I hate to whine, but without the pain pills it’s almost impossible.
And yes, Miranda is adorable and that is why I don’t regret anything with having her. But I think daily tasks would be easier if the pain went away. ^_^
