When I became pregnant, I remember I started to become very aware of everything I put on and in my body. First you start with the foods that you are and aren’t supposed to eat. Then you realize that even things you put on your skin is absorbed and shared with your baby. For some reason though, companies haven’t really considered making daily skin care products to meet the needs of pregnant women. It was very difficult to find a moisturizer with sunscreen that didn’t have retinol or some other anti-aging agent.
Now I think about anything that goes on Pumpkin. I research the wash we use. The sunscreen we use. Everything gets fully researched (remember my post about dish washing soap?). I’m incredibly concerned about the things I put on her body because the years of exposure start now. That concern has extended from her to items I use on myself or that my husband uses.
I currently use EWG.org website to look up products. If they have the product in their database, you can read about the ingredients in the product and see it’s overall rating. This is a far from perfect database, but I feel like it’s the only site that is at least trying to get the truth out there. Also it does not have a large assortment of products. But it’s a start. I also enjoy Leah Segedie and her BookieBoo network, because she is a constant source of information on this topic. She’s also working on a video about products we put on babies, so look out for that too!
Besides looking up products online, I am starting to look into the use of essential oils. I’m not 100% convinced about the use of essential oils, but I have a kit and a book that details the oils and then things you may want to treat with what oil can treat it. Sort of like a natural remedies recipe book. I will probably be blogging about my journey trying out essential oils. Please let me know if you already use essential oils (I can also order you oils if you need it!).
This is all about awareness. I never thought of myself as overly green or hippie-esque, but I have to be honest and I am concerned. It seems like skin and food product companies have been allowed to run rampant with very little regulation or research. One has to wonder why the increase in so many diseases, allergies, and cancers. It must be linked to something. I have to be honest, I’m not 100% there yet. Sometimes I forget to look things up until after I purchase. I still get plastic bags at the store even though I have those other re-usable bags. I have work to do, but I’m trying. Mostly it’s because I want pumpkin to have the best life I can give her, but also because I want to be around and healthy for her.
I would love to hear your thoughts. Are you starting to look into your everyday products more? Are you using essential oils? Do you trust the companies making things for your skin?
