I love crafts. Unfortunately, I have very little free time to create the things I have pinned to my Pinterest board.
But what I do have is plenty of pieces. I purchase supplies when I make a run to JoAnns and then they sit in the office. Last weekend I sat down, took some supplies together and created a Felt board for pumpkin to play with.
At Storytime, the leader often does one storytelling with felt pieces. Well Pumpkin was always the first to rush the board and take down those pieces as soon as she could put them up. I knew I had to create a board that she could play with at home.
For the felt base, I purchased felt that had a sticky backing. This allowed it to “stick” onto the posterboard (which was previously bought for another craft and sat unused). I decided to start with shapes because they are the easiest for me to cut. Not only do I have arthritis which makes it hard to use my hands for stuff like this, but I think my scissors are getting dull because man would they not cut (see my sad excuse for a star).
While my shapes are nothing to Pin, Pumpkin LOVES the board just like I thought she would. She gathers the shapes all up and then carefully puts the shapes down together. She doesn’t say what the shape is yet, but she’s quite proud of herself when she put them onto the board. It’s so much fun and I can see building on this to teach her shapes, colors, animals and numbers. Probably even math concepts as well.
Here are some tips if you want to make a felt board for your little one:
Get some sharp scissors.
It’s just makes things more difficult to cut without it and the felt will start to fray.
Put it on the ground.
At first I wanted to put the board against the wall, but I quickly discovered that pumpkin liked crawling on it and placing the shapes all over it. The board has bent, but is okay for now. If it breaks, the board is pretty easy and fast to replace.
Find ways to get felt shapes.
If you aren’t overly creative or have problems cutting shapes like me, there are many places to buy felt shapes. I found Etsy stores and some Amazon products that sell shapes. I will be buying a farm set soon because pumpkin loves animals but I will never be able to cut a pig or cow that will be recognizable as a pig or cow.
I hope you enjoyed this! What felt crafts have you done with your little one?
