I love subscription boxes. Although the ones I tend to purchase are boxes focused on items for kid and baby. I have been a subscriber to Citrus Lane for a little over a year but that ended with October’s box.
Here is my unboxing video for the October box:
The boxes are around $27 per month. There are various subscription levels which offer a slightly lower price if you pay for X months at a time.
About three months ago, I couldn’t justify the price. As you can see from my past YouTube videos, the box offerings continued to go downhill. We would receive items from the same companies over and over again. Initially the concept of the subscription was to help expose us to new brands. Brands that I wouldn’t find otherwise at Target or Babies R Us. But month after month we would get items from the same brands. It’s like Citrus Lane partnered with a few companies and that’s all we were going to get. I think we have more Skip Hop dishes, bowls, etc than we could possibly use with one child because of Citrus Lane.
Citrus Lane started up a store to go along with their Subscription Services. I strongly feel that the subscription boxes are only meant to promote items and brands in their store. Last subscription box we got two people and car toys but in the store they have items to help build a city. Why couldn’t we get one person/car and one thing from the city? Why get two items from the same company to begin with?
Three months ago, I went to cancel my subscription. They offered me a lowered price for around $16. I decided to continue to see if maybe the boxes would get better. October was my last box at this discount and I was so disappointed I cancelled online right away.
Along with my normal subscription I also ordered a few “Mystery Boxes”. There are boxes that tend to have more offerings and are typically sold out very quickly after being advertised. Each box I ordered I was disappointed in. The boxes had items that I got in regular monthly boxes (which they warn you could happen). It was just another waste of money.
I love being exposed to new companies and new items. Particularly items that help me “play” with my toddler in a new way. But I cannot justify the cost when those items are poorly chosen or are unappealing to us. As a subscriber, I felt that the real focus of Citrus Lane is their online store. The almost daily emails about what to purchase in the store was too much.
At this point, I’m going to take a portion of the money I was spending and go out and find new companies/products on my own. I’ll have more control, will avoid duplicate items and spend less overall. I’ll document it along the way here. So while I’m saddened and disappointed in what Citrus Lane has become, I’m glad to be saving the money for better use.
