This past weekend, I was away for a couple of days at Blog Her conference. While I had a blast, I did feel bad about spending time away from my family. I declared Sunday would be family day! No matter how tired I was. That’s when we decided to take a trip to the Ventura County Fair after swim lessons.
I’ve never been to the Ventura County Fair. Or at least that I can remember. So I had no idea what to expect. Thankfully I was pleasantly surprised. They have a lot to offer young children that are at least 36″ in height. Any smaller and the number of things they can do is quite reduced. But at the 36″ requirement I was surprised by the number of rides available to her. Some of the rides Dad had to go on with her. Be prepared to spend a lot of tickets. At first I didn’t think we could get through 42 tickets, but that goes quickly if another adult has to go on the ride with the child. We all went on the Ferris Wheel and that cost us 18 tickets! But I was determined to let her go on anything she wanted (that she could go on) so I gleefully bought more tickets.
Here are a couple of pieces of advice. I know I’ve only been once, but there are some things that would have made our trip easier.
- The Bathrooms are actually quite clean. I was very surprised by this. But the place to wash your hands was a mess with no towels at times. I just came prepared with wipes and some towels to clean our hands separately. But at least no Potty accidents!
- Bring Cash. Lots of it. Everything takes cash and while the credit line wasn’t long, there is only one ticket booth that I saw that takes credit. It’s just easier to bring lots of cash.
- Wear Sunscreen. It was totally overcast and cool so I didn’t even think about it. Normally I slather sunscreen on the whole family. Well I ended up with a burn all over my shoulders and neck because I didn’t think to wear any sunscreen.
- Maybe bring your own food for the littles or eat before. There seemed to be a lot of fair food, but none of it was really appropriate for a toddler. We ended up with the hot dog on a stick, but she didn’t even really eat that. Yes, there will be plenty of popcorn, cotton candy, ice cream, fudge (which is DELICIOUS), but in terms of actual food….I didn’t find the options that great.
The Ventura County Fair goes through August 14th. We didn’t go to the concert, but every night they have a different act on stage. We had a blast as a family filled with memories that will last a lifetime.
