No time for you, no time for me

Interesting week this week. Work was tough, but made it through and ended with a great round of fixes. Things may be a bit off for the next week at work since they are working on the next release and I’m sitting there with bugs and CRs for the current release. But we’ll see. Hopefully, I’ll work with my boss to work on something that continues to challenge me. I really do love where I work, the team I work with and what my job is.

Then there is the wedding planning. RSVPs are coming in but very slowly. This gives me some small amount of panic because if we don’t have a persons rsvp/meal selection, they won’t have food. Even if they decide to come unannounced. There is no extra. I’m not sure how to stress that to people and still be nice about it.

In other wedding news, we got an astronomical quote from our florist. Sadly, I had to chop away at the decoration ideas I had in my head. Gone are the flower balls, reduced are the bridesmaid flowers, the centerpieces will have to be neutered. I’m not sure why this bothers me so. I’m not sure if people care that much about flowers at a wedding, but I guess it’s an overall look. But I know I can’t make us spend so much on flowers. It’s just silly. Hopefully our guests will understand.
Weekend wedding plans involve looking at linens (which are also probably too expensive for me to rent) and printing a few more invitations.

It’s starting to hit me how close the wedding is. The other day I thought of it in terms of how many paychecks are left before the wedding and that depressed me. It’s really difficult to pay for a wedding, and Matt has taken on most of that burden. Unfortunately. I will probably make payments or make it up to him somehow, but it’s frustrating. In terms of time left, it’s stressful that everything has to be done in a month! What am I leaving out? What am I forgetting? Will people even come?

Next in my life is GamingAngels. I’ve set up a couple of business relationships this week that I’m proud of. Our contest with Geek Chic Cosmetics was well received. I have set us up to be a sponsor of a party at SDCC and a media partner of a women and games event. Our PR and CM angels are taking off in their positions and I LOVE the extra help. Our whole staff has been amazing these past couple of weeks. I hope we can keep the momentum going. I’ll be at SDCC next week, but won’t have as many interviews as last year. I guess that’s a good thing, because last year I couldn’t even enjoy SDCC. But it’s a bad thing because that means it will be sooooo crowded that in the end, it might just suck. I also fully believe they let in too many people as press. Because every press conference is warning of being overcrowded and too full. Unless SDCC changes or moves, I believe this will be my last one. It’s just not worth all the frustration. It used to be my favorite con in the world and now I just dread it.

A weird thing happened this week, someone wrote me stating that they are done because I don’t have time for them. At first this made me sad, but then it made me angry. I work all day from 9-7, then come home and work out for an hour, by 9pm I start my work on GamingAngels (while I eat dinner) and do a mixture of that and wedding until 1am. This is my routine every day. I don’t have any extra time to play a video game, watch a movie, or spend time with my future husband. I don’t take time out to just sit or breathe and you know what? I’m okay with that. Right now I have a perfect balancing act for me. It upsets me that someone can’t look at everything I’m doing and understand that I might be completely unavailable at least until the wedding is over. I work my ass off and I do it because I am passionate and love every aspect of what I’m doing now. I have no regrets about how hard I work and I refuse to be guiltily persuaded into feeling bad about it.

Now I’ve already spent too much time here. Have to go and check out linens! woot!

Getting hits over the holidays

This is the first holiday that I’ve been really concerned with watching the amount of content on GamingAngels.com. What’s been interesting is that our staff has been working hard, and we are having a great amount of new content on the site. But our Alexa ranking is going all over the place. Which means it will stable out after the holidays and go back to it’s normal number, but it is weird to watch.

We seem to be getting a great number of hits, which should be increased by an article that is going up today or tomorrow.

I’m really proud of the staff, and I’ve pushed myself to get interviews and articles out when I can. I hope this shows that we’ll have an even better year in 2010! Because I’m looking forward to some exciting stuff from us!

Start of week 3 of unemployment but not worried

I can’t figure out why I’m not worried. This is the start of my third week of unemployment. I have completely reformatted my resume. It now looks better and is formatted to the type of job that I now want to go for. Yes, I have decided to slightly change careers and try for a career as Project Manager, Producer, or Web Producer. I am interested in Project Management and am trying to get my PM certification. Money is basically holding me back, but isn’t that always the case?

Yes I’ve decided to switch from IT. The typical Systems Admin, Network admin, help desk roles. Because frankly, they bore me. While I know alot about IT, I am best at mixing my IT knowledge with others to get a project completed. I know how to really talk to people that don’t understand IT. It’s time I go for a position where I am engaged and enthusiastic about working there. Hopefully never have to change an printer toner again.

In addition to looking for jobs daily, I have also filed my unemployment. The process seems to take a long time before you get approved to get your first check.

So all that should have me worried, only I’m not. Every day I have a full schedule with tasks on both GA, and personal life. I barely have time to actually rest. I don’t ever just sit on the couch and veg out. I’m either contacting people, scheduling appointments, writing articles or working on the dev site. Which is extremely interesting to me. I love working on GA. Just need to get myself to stop updating the old site and work on the new site.

The sun is absolutely beautiful today and hopefully it shows that the days will start getting warmer. I will be attending GDC next week. I have a full three days of appointments. Should be fun and I have some serious work I want to do there. I hope to represent for GamingAngels.com in the best way that I can.

I actually thought I’d get to rest more being unemployed. But I’m busier than ever. I guess that’s just me. ^_^

Thinking back on the last couple of days

I need to start taking pictures to add to these posts. Not of me, since I don’t really like that, but just of the things or events I write about to include here. Friday I went to Startonomics which is an all day event put together by the wonderful women of Dealmaker Media. The event was a blast of information, so much that I really had to sit an digest it afterwards. I believe the event was definitely worth going to, but I do believe they may have to include less speakers for the next one. A few speakers said incredibly interesting things, but there was no follow-up Q&A because the event was behind schedule. Julia from GamerVixens went with me and we both agree that it was a ton of information to take in. I learned that it is going to be tough to get money in this economy. Before you try and get funding you now have to have a product that is proven. I also learned some SEO tips that I pretty much knew, but had it confirmed. Xoops, GamingAngels.com prior CMS, has no ability to work with SEO, so GamingAngels is taking quite a hit in terms of SEO. That is why we are having a site re-design from the back-end to the front-end.

This morning I bought some domain names. Sean from Lalawag made the suggestion to buy your own name as a domain name. Very smart suggestion that I had never thought of. Good thing it was available. I’ll probably have it point here, but it’s a good practice. If you are making an online brand of yourself, why not have your name as a valid domain name? I know people search my name. I see it bring people to GamingAngels.com.

Which brings me to GamingAngels.com. I have not worked on the site much this weekend, like I had planned to. But with Matt’s birthday and a cousin’s wedding I guess I was fooling myself thinking I would have spare time. Matt’s birthday was Friday, but we’re going to our favorite restaurant tonight, The Bottle Inn. It was our first date and will probably be a part of our lives forever. Amazing food, amazing wine and the best staff a restaurant could ever have. I’m definitely looking forward to indulging tonight and then I’ll have to start the diet tomorrow. Why am I on a diet? Because I would like to lose about 20 pounds before E3. E3 is my goal since it will be a huge convention for networking.

Yesterday we attended my cousin’s wedding. Very interesting mix of people. Stillettos and miniskirts will not be allowed at my wedding. Nor will guns. Memo to self, don’t have a wedding at a house and not expect people to have sex in the bedrooms. Yes, people will be in the mood given enough alcohol and will not respect your house.

Today I got an overdue oil change and am waiting for the Killzone 2 beta to download. It’s taking freaking forever. I have updated one gadget blog and a news item but I have quite a few articles to put up still. Maybe I’ll do it tomorrow though. We should see a slew of NY comic con posts from two of our editors that attended the convention. April and I will be at a God of War III event this week as well as Street Fighter IV launch party. Two amazing events in one week. I can’t wait!!

Anyway, this has been far too long for me to be away from GamingAngels.com. The Killzone 2 demo is only at 60%. le sigh. I’m going back to answering emails and posting about games this week. Have a great Sunday night!
