One of my mom’s favorite pictures is of me on the phone during Baby prep class. Baby (doll) on the table and I’m Facebooking away. At the time it was a joke because the baby was a doll and the class was on break. But today a study came out that made me think twice about my habits.
Researchers at the Boston Medical Center found that when parents whip out their phones when eating at a restaurant, particularly a fast food restaurant, their kids begin acting up. (IE, your phone addiction is ruining everyone in the whole place’s meal!) “It’s just normal childhood behavior,” said parenting coach Toni Schutta. “If I can’t get your attention in a positive way, I’m going seek it in a negative way.”
It’s not only that. Schutta says parents spend, on average, 11 hours a day using electronic devices. Kids are missing out on learning about social etiquette because the people around them are buried in their phones. I can’t even imagine what they will be like at teens if they are missing out on observing and learning these important lessons.
Another thing I’m realizing is that social media/blogging and just being online can wait until after pumpkin goes to sleep. Yes, there isn’t a ton of time to relax when she naps. And by night time I’m tired, pumping and falling asleep. As you can tell, I’m blogging less. I try to save it for nights and weekends.
I’m making a concentrated effort to make sure I’m engaged when I’m with pumpkin. I can use the phone for taking pictures or video or texts with the grandparents/hubby. But when I’m with pumpkin, it’s social media black out. Unless we are at a sponsored event because that has different rules. Otherwise all updates will be once pumpkin has gone to sleep or if I’m alone.
As we all seem to be buried in our phones, I refuse to miss out on pumpkin growing up. I refuse to miss out on her non-verbal cues as she gets older. I want us to interact as a family.
So if next time you text/tweet/or message and I don’t answer…I’m probably with pumpkin. Or I’ve fallen asleep. Either way…I’ll get to you later. ^_^
