I was a Vikings fan from the day I was born. I bleed purple and gold. Growing up I never questioned why the Vikings. My dad cheered on the Vikings and that was all I needed to know. Logical questions could have come up. Why the Vikings? We have never lived or much less visited Minnesota. It’s not like they had a dynasty that we can say we were bandwagon fans. Nope it was just a team we grew up with as a family.
Now with my daughter, I’ll raise her to cheer on the Vikings too. She’ll learn the songs. She’ll learn to cheer through the bad as well as the good. Maybe one day we’ll even get to visit the team in Minnesota (before the bad weather hits).
Sports have always been about family to me. About memories of the first time singing Take Me Out to the Ball Game. Or memories of seeing Hockey players slam each other into the boards.
As I watch the LA Kings celebrate the Stanley Cup, I’m reminded of what it means to be a fan. What it means to be a sports family. To expose your kids to a new learning experience and maybe even learn yourself (watching soccer for the first time).
Part of the fun of having a “family” team is that you have instant gift ideas. Fanatics.com makes it super easy to find those gifts and buy something for yourself at the same time. I love that I can buy something for all my teams (I love the Vikings, Clippers, LA Kings and the LA Dodgers) in one place. They have a ton of items I’ve never seen in other sports stores. I mean how cute are these Vikings Earings? Also this Toddler Cheerleading outfit is a must for this season! I’m thinking it’s perfect for mom and baby Opening day pictures!
One day we’ll have matching outfits and we’ll yell at the horrible officiating. She’ll be just enjoying the moment, but I’ll know we are creating memories that I will always remember. Because cheering on your team is more than just a hobby or something to do instead of the yardwork. It’s a part of your life.
